What is PROMPT?
PROMPT stands for Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets. It’s a hands-on, research-based approach to speech therapy that helps children develop the motor skills needed for clear and coordinated speech.
PROMPT is a holistic approach and looks at the whole child, including physical-sensory, cognitive-linguistic, and social-emotional aspects of communication development.
PROMPT is a functional approach and focuses on meaningful words/phrases as well as motivating activities for the child. Family and caregivers are always included since learning new motor skills takes practice and consistency.
Who Benefits from PROMPT?
PROMPT is especially effective for children with:
Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)
Motor speech disorders
Speech sound disorders
Delayed or limited verbal expression
However, it can also benefit children with a variety of other communication challenges. The best way to determine if PROMPT is appropriate for your child is to have an evaluation completed by an SLP with appropriate PROMPT training.
